Special preparation needs to go into preparing the pool for winter since they can’t survive subfreezing temperatures. Be sure to check for liner leaks and make any necessary repairs before winterizing your pool.

First you must thoroughly clean the pool. Test and balance the pool water and treat it with a chemical winterizing kit. These can be purchased at any pool supply store. Clean the filter. Drain all the plumbing lines and store the hoses in a protected area. Drain and disassemble the pump and the automatic chemical dispenser. Drain the filter, filter valves, and the line to the gauge. Store the pump, filter, and chemical dispenser in a warm and dry place. Shut down and disconnect all electrical lines. Then cover the pool with the pool cover.

Always clean the pool before balancing the water for winter. Use a leaf skimmer to remove leafs and debris from the waters surface. Remove the scum at the waterline by using a sponge and cleaner recommended by the liner manufacturer.

Scrub vinyl-lined pools walls with a liner brush to remove any algae and dirt. A couple hours prior to vacuuming the pool, turn off the filtering system. Fill the vacuum hose with water by holding it to the return inlet. Now vacuum the bottom of the pool.

Remove the catch basket from the skimmer. Store the baskets in a warm and dry place. Lower the pool water level just below the skimmer. Put a block of Styrofoam in the skimmer to prevent possible damage from a freeze.

Turn off the pool pump. Remove and clean the filter basket. Store the pump in a warm and dry place. Drain the plumbing lines and blow them free of water with an air compressor. Plug the pump inlet hole with a screw-in plastic cap or expandable rubber stopper. You can purchase either one of these caps at any pool supply store.

After a job well done, greenhouses can provide a great way to garden outside and enjoy the outdoors in the winter. Be sure to make use of outside solar lights to stay safe if you continue working after dusk.  These lights also provide a nice ambient light around your above ground pool.
