Taking Care of Your Camping Chairs

There is virtually no question that having a few camp chairs will make your next camping trip a lot more enjoyable. Not having to sit on the ground (or on a rock) will do a lot to lift anyone’s spirits after a long day of hiking through a forest and setting up camp. But now that you have some camping chairs, what do you need to do to make sure they last as long as they can? Let’s take a look at some simple maintenance you can do on them.

The first thing you should do is actually before you buy the chairs. Getting quality chairs from a reputable manufacturer is by far the best thing that can be done to make your camp chairs last a long time. You can do all the maintenance you want to on a shoddy chair, but it’s not really going to help too much.

Once you have a good quality chair, there are two basic components to take care of: the metal frame and the fabric (generally canvas) that you sit on. The metal frame will usually be pre-treated to ward off rust, but there’s no reason to tempt fate. Keep the chair out of the rain as much as possible, so it doesn’t have the chance to rust. Of course, that’s not always possible when you camp so if the chair does get wet, make sure to towel it off as best you can before you put it up for storage.

The best maintenance that you can do on the fabric part of the chair is of the preventative sort. Don’t put more load in the chair than it can support and if you notice any tears, get them patched or sewn up before they can spread too far.

It’s a bit of cliche, but it’s worth saying: Take care of your camping chairs and they’ll take care of you.
