Next to their school, your child spends the most amount of time each day in their bedroom. Unfortunately, the average bedroom is filled with allergens and irritants that are very often the cause for all kinds of eczema. If your child is suffering from eyelid eczema, the first area you may want to address is changing their bedroom.

The first area of the bedroom to examine and possibly change is the pillow. Because your child’s eyelids rest against or near the pillow for a long period of time during sleep, it is very likely this may be causing the eczema. As part of an eczema treatment for eyelids, you should switch to a pillow made from hypoallergenic materials to reduce allergens. Adding a plastic, hypoallergenic liner will also cut down the dust, dust mites, mold, and other allergens that might cause eczema. Finally, try to use a cotton pillow case that will allow the skin to breathe more easily and reduce sweating.

It would also be highly recommended to switch to a gentler detergent for your pillow and all of your bed linens. Laundry detergents are a leading cause of eczema. However, there are plenty of milder cleansing options available that will get your sheets just as clean but without the irritations. Many soap companies offer dye free, fragrance free detergents that are targeted for eczema treatment children.

Finally, look around the room and see what may need to be changed. If the windows or walls are prone to mold, you may want to use a latex, mold-resistant paint. You may want to change to plastic blinds that can be easily cleaned versus cloth drapes that collect dust and mold. Adding a humidifier will help your child’s skin stay moist throughout the night and an air filter will remove any allergens or irritants in the air. These are very simple changes, but they can make a big difference in improving your child’s eyelid eczema.
