If you have lost job and waiting to file for unemployment in Ohio, do not wait. As soon as you become unemployed, you should contact the State Unemployment Insurance agency. Ohio state allows you to file a claim by phone or over the Internet. When you file a claim, you will need to give the basic information, such as address, employment history etc. Make sure you give thorough and accurate details if not your claims may get delayed.

Confirm your eligibility for unemployment benefits. Typically, you cannot get payback for voluntary separation. So, you must have unemployed by no slip of your own. You must be actively looking for work. Refer to Ohio unemployment claims guide for detailed eligibility criteria. If you are disabled you might not have the eligibility. Review if you can get disability insurance in that case. In addition, your earlier job must have earned take-home pay adequate to cover your living expenditure. So that means part-time work conditions do not meet the requirements.

Next stage is to organize the records essential to send the request. Generally you require the following:

Earlier Employment Details such as person’s name and address of the employers. You in general need 1-2 years of history. It would be useful if you have your tax papers handy. An estimate of date and length of each job is desirable as well. Usually employers do not furnish this info to states.

Personal details such as legal name, social, telephone #, residence address etc.
Basis for leaving the job – voluntary or involuntary and how you left the job. Any documents if available will be useful.

Your bank’s Routing Transit Number and your Account Number if you ask for Direct Deposit for your benefit amount,

If you are not a US national, you will need your Alien Registration Documentation issued by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). This includes your alien registration type and number, country of origin, and your Employment Authorization Card or Permanent Residency documentation if authorized to work in the United States.

You are required to file your papers with the state where you were employed. If you have worked in a state other than the one where you now live or if you worked in various states, the state UI agency where you now live can offer information about filing your claims with other states.

Unemployment agencies may take two to four weeks to process your claim. few States need a one week waiting period; hence, the second week claimed is the first week of payment.
