Anyone can easily repair a clogged toilet. One does not need to call a plumber in order to do this simple task. In fact, all it takes is some knowledge on how a typical toilet works.
The easiest way of de-clogging a toilet is using a plunger. There should be enough water in the bowl for the rubber suction cup to cover. Then, get hold of the handle and work it up and down. If the bowl does not have enough water, bring a pan of water and pour water on it. Never flush the toilet since it will only result to an overflowing bowl. There are two kinds of plunger that can help in dealing with common basement bathroom plumbing clogging problems – the bulb and fold-out types.
Whatever is causing the clog in the toilet drain is usually within easy reach of the plunger. But when the plunger cannot address the problem, using a hook to pull out the blockage can be a great alternative. Another trick is to use a wire coat hanger.
There is also the use of a toilet auger for basement bathroom plumbing. This boasts of a long tube that will guide the snake and hook the blockage into a trap. This is done by inserting the auger into the trap and turning its crank. When the auger has tightened, it means that the snake has found its way into the blockage.
The auger should be able to remove the cause of the clogging when it is being pulled. In case this does not remove the blockage, try it a few more times. Likewise, the blockage may be pulled out by using a plumber’s snake (another anti-clog tool).
If you have done all the above-mentioned tips and you still haven’t solved the problem, the last resort is to remove the toilet and get rid of the blockage by turning it upside down. This is certainly not an easy job and calls for the help of a plumber. But anyone can try the abovementioned methods first before resorting to this final alternative.
