Cotton blankets were once about as stiff as a board after a washing or two. With fabric softeners added to the rinse cycle, they would soften slightly. However, the real problem was not so much in the washing method, but in the cotton fabric itself. Today our blankets are enjoying the benefit of being created from the best of the best when it comes to cotton.
Among the two best cottons for weaving blankets, or bedding in general, are Pima cotton and Egyptian cotton. Both are known for the extra long staples the plant grows. In fact, about the only difference in the two is that Pima is native to the western United States and was named for the Pima Indians. Egyptian cotton is grown along a small area that surrounds the Nile River.
Most of us are very familiar with the natural material from Egypt. It has been widely publicized and advertised. In fact, it is the fabric of choice for most high quality bedding. While it is the premiere fabric, one should be aware that Pima cotton is known as America’s Egyptian cotton. Very few of us could distinguish one from the other with a label to name the fabric. Both are more expensive than other cottons, with the Egyptian bringing in the highest dollar.
Cotton blankets have become one of the most trusted coverlets for the warmer months, although they are equally welcomed in the winter. Egyptian cotton blankets have become the favorite among coverlets because of the soft texture. The colors offered are now so vibrant that there is a selection that will match or complement any bedroom. Most manufacturers offer so many colors and shades that it is often difficult to settle on a single color. With the price, even for the Egyptian fabric, being so affordable there is no need to limit the choices.
Whether the blanket is made of Pima cotton or Egyptian cotton, the fabric will be soft enough for a baby’s bed, yet durable enough to last for years.
