There is more than one reason I think a trunk bike rack is superior to the more traditional roof top variety of bike racks.  The main reason is that I drive an SUV with decent sized tires and wheels (it is by no means a ‘monster truck’ by any stretch of the imagination); it simply is an SUV that looks like it evolved from a 4 x 4 truck rather than a few inbreeding station wagons and mini vans.  But I digress…

The thing is, the roof line is rather high on an SUV, and when you add a few more inches on top of that for a bike rack, it starts to get pretty high up there.  And I stand about 6 feet tall!  I would have to climb up into the doorway and wedge myself against the open door frame to be able to secure the bike to the rack.  This was all back in my 20′s and early 30′s.  Now that I’m into my 40′s, have had a back surgery, knee surgery, achilles surgery plus I just don’t seem to have the energy or oomph I used to have, only needing to lift my bike up to about chest height is might appealing to me.  Oh, and then there is also the fact that you don’t have to worry about this potentially happening to you!

You thought *you* had a bad day?
