Benefits of Fluoride to Your Teeth

Fluoride, an element found in the earth’s crust brings many benefits to help you maintain clean and healthy gums, and prevent the onset of tooth decay. Fluoride is available in many forms and it can be found in your drinking water, in mouthwashes and mouth rinses, toothpastes, foods and beverages that you can take as supplements.  Here are some of the benefits fluoride brings to your teeth:

* Fluoride helps in promoting remineralization of your teeth. Bacteria from particles of food left in your mouth form into acids that break down the enamel of your tooth, eventually causing tooth decay. When you drink fluorinated water, or use fluorinated toothpastes and mouth washes, the fluoride content in your saliva will help build back the structure of your tooth that was damaged by decay.  The more fluoride you have in your mouth, the faster the remineralization will be. This is why my Walnut Creek dentist says drinking fluorinated water and brushing the teeth with fluorinated toothpaste at least three times a day can help.

*Fluoride makes your teeth more resistant to decay. During the remineralization process, your teeth repair the damage tooth decay has brought so your teeth will be stronger than before. During the repair process, your teeth form a compound that has more resistance to tooth decay-causing acids.

*Fluoride helps in slowing down acid formation that leads to tooth decay. When you eat or drink, the sugars and starches from the food you eat leaves bacteria in your mouth and turns into acids that attacks the hard enamel of your tooth. This eventually causes tooth decay. However, if the water you are drinking is fluorinated, and if you regularly brush your teeth using fluorinated toothpastes, the fluoride content in your saliva will slow down the ability of the bacteria to produce acid from the starches and sugar. Fluoride however, should be taken in moderation.
